Nordicano — the court ladder with bonus points

Winners move up, losers move down — and from round 3 the court you stand on is worth points in itself. A night that sharpens as it goes, without a spreadsheet.

The rules

How the court ladder works

The core idea is simple: after each round, the winning pair moves up one court and the losing pair moves down one. If you are already on the top or bottom court, you stay put. Everyone plays every round — the format requires exactly four per court, with no bench.

Round 1 uses your setup order as the starting ranking, so you can seed the courts yourself — or just enter the roster in the order people arrive. From round 2, the four players on each court are ranked by points, then wins, and finally at random if everything is level.

Your points are the points you win in the match — plus the court bonus from round 3. Regular rounds are played to 24 points in total, with a tiebreak point at 12–12, so every match gets a winner.

Toward the end, any round can be turned into a final round to 32 points: every court is re-seeded across the whole field on points, not court placement. So every point counts the same here.

Variant

Nordicano (Teams) — the same ladder, fixed teams

If you prefer fixed pairs, you set the teams before the start, and round 1 places them on the courts in setup order. From there the same rules apply: the winning team moves up, the losing team moves down, with the same court bonus from round 3.

Rounds go to 24 with a tiebreak at 12–12, plus the optional final round to 32. The format requires exactly two teams per court — no bench.
